New Joiner - FAQ's

Joining Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Club

Please follow the New Joiner Form link located at the right-hand side of the page!

Please provide information such that we can get a feel for your experience and expectations.

We have a wide range of teams, so whether you are looking for a committed side or a more social experience, we should be able to find a fit!

We will do our best to get back to you within a couple of days.

Depending on the time of year, we will ask you to attend either September trials or an appropriate training session. Team Captains will then deal with you directly concerning selection for Saturday games.

Please do take the time to read through the following:

How do I become a Member of Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Club?

After you have attended training and played some Saturday games, usually two or three, you will be asked to join the Club. At this point you will be required to buy our Club kit (GBP 40 for a shirt and socks), complete a Membership Application and set up a Direct Debit for the payment of our Annual Subscription Fee.

What is the cost of annual membership?

Our Annual Subscription Fee for the 2010-11 season is GBP 240. Students and unemployed members pay a reduced fee of GBP 120. This must be paid to the Club via Direct Debit in three installments of GBP 80/40 in October, December and March. If you are injured for a sustained period, the Club will arrange for repayment of an appropriate amount.

How many sides does the Club run?

We run twelve Men's teams and seven Women's teams. All teams are competitive (to a greater or lesser degree!) and play League matches.

Does the Club have mixed or veteran sides?

We run a (very) social non-League mixed team who play on Sundays throughout the year. The Club also enters a competitive mixed team into the England Hockey National Cup. We have two men's veteran sides playing Saturday League games: the Vets and the Super Vets.

Does the Club have a Junior Section?

We do! The Club works in partnership with the Westminster Sports Unit (WSO) and members of the Active Westminster programme. The Junior Programme is for all children between the ages of 5 and 16. For further details, please see the relevant section on our website.

Where do we play?

We play at Paddington Recreation Ground, London W9 1PD. Paddington Rec is located between Carlton Vale, Moreshead Road, Grantully Road and Sutherland Avenue. The closest tube station is Maida Vale.

Please see: http://www.westminster.gov.uk/workspace/assets/publications/siteinfopadrec-1261583395.pdf.

Telephone: 020 7625 4303/20 7641 3642.

The Club has use of two floodlit artificial pitches at Paddington Rec which are side-by-side. The water-based pitch was laid in 2009 in collaboration with Westminster Council following a huge fundraising effort on the part of the Club. Our other pitch – known affectionately as the “Tiger” – is a 3G rubber-crumb pitch. Due to the large number of home games to be accommodated each Saturday, teams play the occasional game on an ‘overflow’ pitch within London.

Where is the Clubhouse?

We get fed and watered in the quaint Carlton Tavern, Carlton Vale London NW6 5EU. Telephone: 020 7372 0822. The Carlton is a short walk from the pitches. Teas are offered here after home games. Come in for a pint! We’re not hard to spot!

When does pre-season training start?

Pre-season schedules vary from team to team, but will usually start during August. The Club is also involved in summer hockey during the close season.

When is training?

For the upcoming 2010-2011 season, the Club will offer the following training sessions:

Monday: Ladies' 1-4 (1930-2100) Tuesday: Men's 1-5, Zaks, Spaniards (1930-2100) Wednesday: Ladies' 5-7, Men's 6, Hammers, Thirsts(1930-2100)Thursday: Ladies' 1 (1930-2100), Men's 1-2 (1900-2100)

All sessions are held at Paddington Rec.

Our pitch training is run by qualified coaches for Club Members and is free of charge. Team Captains (or the New Joiner coordinator) will let you know which training sessions you should be attending.

When does League hockey start?

League games for all teams tend to commence at the end of September. League games are generally on Saturdays, with 90 minute slots starting at 10.30 am, 12.00 pm, 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm. Match fees are GBP 10 per game and GBP 5 for students/unemployment. Match fees for non-Members are GBP 25, limited to four games over the season. Match fees are collected by teams on a Saturday.

How does Saturday selection work?

Team captains hold selection meetings on a weekly basis. Players may move between teams, depending on commitment, performance and preference. Please see our Selection Policy for further information.

Where do I buy Club kit? Our distinctive white and blue striped shirts and socks are available from our official supplier Tempest. Skirts and shorts should be navy blue. In the event of a clash, we wear red shirts and socks.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.

Get free downloads for Internet Explorer 7, including recommended updates as they become available. To download Internet Explorer 7 in the language of your choice, please visit the Internet Explorer 7 worldwide page.
